You probably just read the title of this post and thought, “WHAAAAAT?! How can bed rails be therapeutic?!” Oh friends, I am very excited to explain! But first let me back up a bit and tell you how I came to use these DIY bed rails {for lack of a better phrase}. Well, last year when we completed our twin girls' “big girl” room, I decided it was just too pretty to use those unattractive bed rails that I was seeing all over the place. I mean who wants a big mesh rail disturbing the aesthetic of this room?! But, I also didn't want my sweet girls to fall out of bed at night, only to wake up to them screaming and see them sprawled on their floor. No, no. There had to be a better option.

In the recesses of my mind, I recalled seeing somewhere, probably Pinterest, that you can use inexpensive pool noodles to use as DIY bed rails. You simply pop them under your child's fitted sheet and voila! Instant safety. We used these pool noodle bed rails for well over a year, and never had a kiddo fall out of bed. So, without further adieu, read on to learn how to make your own DIY bed rails that are therapeutic as well! This post contains some affiliate links. Click here to read my full disclosure policy.

Though we don't really need the bed rails for safety anymore {they are old enough and still enough when they sleep to not roll right out anymore}, we have recently started using them again. WHY? Because we have found a way to make them therapeutic! I place essential oils on cotton balls and stuff them in each end of the pool noodles. GENIUS {if I do say so myself}! My girls have always been great sleepers, but they have been dozing off even more quickly and quietly than usual, thanks to their “therapeutic bed rails.” Note that essential oils will eat away at the foam pool noodles over time, but given that we purchased our noodles for $2.00 each, I won't mind having to replace them eventually! Read on for all the details.

  • 2 pool noodles per bed {we purchased ours one year at CVS for $2.00 each, but you can find decent deals on Amazon, like these that are about $4.00 each including shipping}
  • Cotton balls or pads
  • Essential Oils {I use Peace and Calming and Lavender}
    • Peace & Calming is a gentle, fragrant blend of essential oils that can be used topically or aromatically to promote relaxation and peace.
    • Lavender is a very versatile essential oil. It is known for its relaxing effects on the body. The fragrance is calming, relaxing and balancing – physically and emotionally. Lavender essential oil can help induce sleep which has made it a common recommendation to ease sleep difficulties.

Tutorial

1) Add 3 drops of essential oils to a cotton ball or pad. A little bit goes a long way when it comes to Young Living Essential Oils, so you really don't need more than that! For each pool noodle, I use 2 cotton pads. I add drops of Peace and Calming to one and Lavender to the other. The Lavender drops are clear, but as you can see, there is some color to the Peace and Calming.

2) Stuff one cotton pad into each end of your pool noodles. If you notice the scent fading over time, simply replace the cotton pads with some that have fresh oils on them.

That's it! How easy and clever is that?! For $4 per bed, my girls are safe AND will drift off to dreamland peacefully every night. The best part is that when the noodles are in place, they are hardly noticeable. Check it out for yourself–you can barely see the little “humps” that the pool noodles create. And my girls' bedroom smells divine!

This is just one of the ZILLON ways I am using my Young Living Essential Oils. I recently told a friend, “My name is Tasha, and I am addicted to essential oils.” Given that essential oils have countless health benefits, I am not too concerned about my addiction and I am sure it will only grow as I continue to find ways to use them in our daily lives!

Since I love the oils so much, I have become a distributor for Young Living. And there has never been a better time to try essential oils for yourself. Right now, I am running an amazing special! If you get a premium Young Living starter kit {which is, on its own, a really great deal at $150–if you purchased the products separately you would spend $290}, you will ALSO get the bonus items described below.
