LOVE THESE! DIY Butterfly Lollipop Valentines--full tutorial by Designer Trapped in a Lawyer's Body!

Hello, friends!  Valentine's Day is just around the corner.  Are you ready?  If you have school-aged kids, you probably have to send Valentines with them to school to give out to their friends.  Our girls are in preschool and are already looking forward to their Valentine's Day Party!  They had a Valentine's Day party last year, too and guess what?  I FORGOT TO SEND VALENTINES TO SCHOOL WITH THEM LAST YEAR.  That's right.  Epic fail.  Bear in mind, too, that I have twin girls so they make up a significant percentage of the class.  And I forgot to send Valentines for their friends.  Mom of the year!

Needless to say, I felt the need to doing something super cool this year to make up for last year.  I made Superhero Lollipop Valentines for the boys in this their {I shared that tutorial over on All Things Thrifty–you can click here to check out that tutorial}.  This post contains some affiliate links.  Click here to read my full disclosure policy.

Materials Needed:

Steps:

1) Using your Silhouette Studio software, begin by adjusting your page settings to 12 x12 inches.

2) Next you need to create your cut file.  You could certainly create your own from scratch, but I purchased the Butterfly Valentine {Design ID #15814}, which is only $.75 right now!

3) If you purchase the same design I did, this is what your screen will look like when you open up your cut file.

4) Make your butterfly slightly smaller by clicking on it and then dragging one of the corners to resize it {you can see the size that I made mine below}.  Then, right click on the butterfly and click “duplicate.”  Then click and move your butterflies to arrange them in straight rows.

5) Now comes the slightly tricky part–adding the text.  I made a video to cover this step because it's easier to explain that way.

6) After you have added text to all of your butterflies, you are ready to draw/cut your design.  Place your card stock on the cutting mat and open the Cut Settings window. By default, all lines in your project will be set to “Cut.”  Just bear in mind that with sketch pens, the pen will be drawing instead of cutting.  Anything that is set to “Cut” will instead be drawn with your sketch pens.  So, you have to select the portion of your design that you do not want drawn the first time around and change the cut style to “No Cut.”  Then, looad your sketch pen and send it to your Silhouette!

7) After your text has been drawn on, DO NOT UNLOAD YOUR CUTTING MAT OR ADJUST IT IN ANY WAY!  Change the text to “no cut” and the outline of the butterfly to “cut.”  Be really careful not to accidentally move any part of your design as you do this. Then, don’t forget to remove your sketch pen and load your cutting blade!  Be sure to also change the “material type” to “card stock.”  Mine cut perfectly with the recommended blade setting of 4.  Then, send it through your Silhouette one last time!

8) Once your design is all drawn and cut, remove the shapes from your cutting mat.

9) Insert your lollipops and you are good to go!

Aren't these adorable?  I just love how they turned out and my girls are BEYOND EXCITED to pass these out to their friends!

Made the “Super” caped crusader version for my grandson and now the butterfly version for my granddaughter. Didn’t have the machine/program so eyeballed the patterns and drew them on plain paper as a template then cut them out of colored stock paper. Hand wrote the sayings with colored pencil. Turned out great. Thanks so much for your clever idea!
