DIY Pineapple Art (the positive + the negative)

Hey, hey friends! Art can be super expensive, so I'm always looking for ways to make my own DIY art on a budget. We've been working on creating new rooms for our twin girls since we recently separated them and that meant we needed a lot of art, so I had to get creative. I made this DIY pineapple art for my daughter, Attley, and we absolutely love the way it turned out. It was so fun to use both the positive and negative space for this pieces. In case you have forgotten from your school days, positive space refers to the main focus of a picture, while negative space refers to the background.

I made this pineapple art with my brand new Cricut Explore Air machine. Since the machine is new to me, I was nervous about how hard it would be to use. So for my first project, I wanted to tackle something super simple and this one fit the bill. It took about 5 minutes and gave us two fabulous pieces of art for Attley's room. It really couldn't have been easier and now I feel much better acquainted with my Cricut–I'm ready to tackle some more difficult projects with it, so stay tuned for those. DIY Pineapple Art Using a Cricut Machine

Materials needed:

• A pineapple image to work with–I used image #M19CD39 from the Cricut design store
• Cricut Explore cutting machine
• 12 x 12 Card stock in 2 different colors (I had this Brights Cardstock Stack 12″ on hand from some other projects I have used it for)
• A glue stick
• Frames for your finished prints. I purchased these 12-inch frames and am very happy with the quality.

Steps:

1) Upload your image in the Cricut Design Space and adjust it for the size of your project. I made mine roughly 11 inches tall and 7.5 inches wide.

2) In the upper right-hand corner of the screen, be sure that the scissors icon appears next to the thumbnail image of your pineapple. That means that your Cricut machine will cut out the image, which is what you want.

3) Click on the green “Go” icon at the top, center of your screen. On the next screen, make sure your image is positioned correctly on the mat you will be using. I used a 12 x 12 mat for this pineapple art and just checked to make sure the entire pineapple was within the boundaries of the cutting mat.

4) Place your card stock on your cutting mat and then click go in the Cricut Design Space! After that, follow the prompts to load your cutting mat and press the start button on the machine. Then watch your Circut Explore work its magic. I could seriously watch it cut things out and draw images ALL DAY LONG. Here's a little video I took while my daughter and I were working on this art (which is why you can hear her sweet voice in the background).

5) Carefully remove your cut out pineapple from the cutting mat. Be sure to remove and hang on to both the positive and negative portion of the design! You'll need both!

6) Place the positive portion of the pineapple design on a contrasting color of card stock. Then, place the negative portion of the design on a contrasting color of card stock as well. That's right–you will be using every bit of paper that went into your Cricut. “Assembling” the negative design will take a few minutes because you need to use a glue stick to glue the little interior pieces of the pineapple onto the paper, but it's kind of fun :)

7) Pop both pineapple art pieces into frames and hang them up.

Isn't that DIY pineapple art project super easy?! And like I said, you can really do it with any shape or image! Take a look at how they look in Attley's room.

Y'all, I'm telling you, my Cricut Explore cutting machine is addictive!
