Last Updated on March 3, 2022
Hello friends! You may remember that this time last year, I participated in the Knock Out Knock Off series with some of my very talented friends {click here to see my other knock off projects}! #knockoutknockoffs Well, it’s that time again this year! Since May I have been participating in the Knock Out Knock Off series with a phenomenal group of talented bloggers. Each month, we have brought you knock off projects from some of your favorite retailers: Anthropologie, Land of Nod, and CB2. This month we are back for our final installment and are tackling one of my absolute favorite stores: Crate and Barrel. Buckle your seat belts….you are in for a treat! As you know, we have been working on our dining room makeover {you can check out our progress so far here}. We are VERY close to being done, so I am already planning on hosting lots of dinners in the near future. That has me thinking about creating a beautiful tablescape and every beautiful tablescape needs the perfect place card holders, right?!
When I saw these wood slice place card holders at Crate and Barrel, I was instantly in love! And to tell you the truth, they are not expensive, BUT I had wood slices left over from my Anthropologie inspired stacked wood slice lamp so I decided to make my own. It's incredibly easy and much less expensive than the Crate and Barrel version.

Materials Needed for DIY Place Card Holders
- Wood slices {I ordered mine from Amazon–they are 1 inch thick and are 3 to 4 inches in diameter}
- Hand saw
- Clamping miter box {this is the exact clamping miter box we use–it is SO handy for so many different projects}
DIY Place Card Holder Tutorial
1) Clamp a wood slice in the center of your clamping miter box.
2) Use your hand saw to saw a shallow channel down the center of your wood slice.
3) Print and place your card holders in the channel. I printed mine on plain white card stock and cut them to size.
THAT'S IT! Seriously, that's the easiest DIY project I have ever tackled and I am absolutely in love with these place card holders.

I would love to know which font you used for your placecard holders please. I love it!
It is one I had to purchase, I think it is called Sweet Pea.
I love the look of these. Honestly, I can see these as a business card holder. It will only hold one, but how cool would this be to have on your desk? Very clever. Thanks for sharing.
Glad you like them! That is a really fun idea. You could probably make a wider cut for more than one. Thanks for reading!
So elegant! It screams fancy, January dinner :)
Thank you, Mila!
That’s a great idea! I will have to show my nephew this, he was just asking the other day for some easy inexpensive ideas for his wedding in December. Thanks for sharing they are very nice!
My pleasure! Thanks so much, Linda!
These are so simple, yet so decorative. I love incorporating birch branches into my home…and this is a creative way to add it to a table setting.
Thanks so much, Erin!
I love these place card holders! I’ve got a bag full of these birch slices… I just might need to try this DIY out!
Thanks so much, Amy! They are so easy and pretty! Thinking of you as you tackle your move!
So perfect that you were able to use the leftover birch slices from your Anthro project! These look so great!!!
I’ve been wanting to make some of these placecards to use during the holidays and now I’m feeling extra inspired and motivated because I LOVE how yours turned out!
Love that you used what you had instead of wasting it. They look amazing.
