New Select Surfaces floors for our bedroom!
Last Updated on March 3, 2022
Hey y'all! If you follow my blog, I hope you have already read this post about why we have chosen laminate floors for our home. And in that post I revealed that we would be tackling the master bedroom flooring installation next. Well, I am happy to report that it is DONE and it is absolutely gorgeous!
Now, before I show you all the glorious after photos, let me show you what our bedroom looked like when we purchased our house. BORING, BEIGE CARPET. {PS- can you tell how inappropriately TINY the outdated fan was????}

Let's be honest, the whole room was boring and beige. We did not do much after we moved in, other than paint the walls, install an appropriately sized fan and hang some new curtains that I made from flat sheets {easiest curtains ever–you can see that tutorial here}. We moved our furniture in and that was it. Let me apologize here for failing to take a photo of the our bedroom with the furniture in place before we ripped the carpet out. I forgot to mention it to Joe before he started ripping the carpet out while I was at work. Ooops. My bad. This post contains some affiliate links for your convenience. We installed the same brand laminate {yes, LAMINATE–you can read all about why we chose laminate flooring for our home in this post} floors that we have installed throughout the main level of our house. They are made by Select Surfaces, which are sold at Sam's Club. They are incredibly well made and durable and are super affordable.
This is not meant to be a full tutorial of how to install laminate flooring. The fact is, installation can vary so much from room to room that it's impossible to write a “how to” guide that would work for everyone. That said, with these floors from Select Surfaces, you generally follow these steps:
- Purchase your flooring. The Select Surfaces floors we used are available at Sam's Club. I really, really recommend that you order the amount of flooring you need on Sam's Club's website. You can either have them shipped to you {right now, shipping of the floors is FREE, which is awesome because it can be quite a pain to load and unload these floors–they are heavy}. If you don't want to have them shipped, you may still want to pay online and pick your floors up so that you are certain there will be enough to complete your project. We realized this after making a trip to Sam's Club, only to learn they only had a few boxes of the flooring. It was very frustrating!
- Do a TON of math to ensure that your final row will be at least 6 inches wide. This may require you to rip your fist row to something less than the full width {that was true for our installation}.
- Remove old flooring and prepare subfloor for new flooring {i.e., remove staples, level out any uneven spots, etc.}.
- Remove baseboards.
- Place appropriate spacers in between the walls and your laminate planks to allow for contraction and expansion of the floors.
- Install, install, install! These floors are awesome because the underlayment is attached to each individual plank, so you don't have to roll out a bunch of foam underlayment first!
- Once you are done re-installing your floors, replace your baseboards, caulk and add quarter round between the floors and baseboard to finish everything off nicely!
Below, you can see Joe working on our fourth row of planks.
Installing the floors was a BEAR of a job. It's not because installing the floors we chose was difficult–they are well made and easy to install. We have installed them in two other rooms in our house with very little difficulty. What made installation in our bedroom so challenging was: 1) our bedroom is ginormous and 2) we had to feed the flooring into our closet and the hallway and I did not want to use transition molding to do it. In other words, we made it more difficult on ourselves. I wanted it to look like the walls were built on top of the floors and are original to the house. Guess what?! We SUCCEEDED! They look amazing and they absolutely look like they are original to the house.
Enough chatter… Take a look for yourself!
Downstairs, we used the Select Surfaces Canyon Oak floors {you can click here to check out how they look in our family room}. When Select Surfaces asked if we would like to try out their new Truffle color, we said YES! They are similar enough to the Canyon Oak to use in the same house, but I think I like the Truffle color even more. It's deep and rich and really helps ground this huge room.
Like the Canyon Oak floors, the Truffle floors are also hand scraped, so they have that authentic wood texture. Check it out.
And now, how about a few more shots of the room? Don't the new floors do a much better job of grounding this room than the beige carpet did?! And can you believe how much painting the walls, changing the fan and installing new floors totally transformed this room?! This is far from a total room makeover {we have had the same DIY furniture and art for 13 years} and yet the change is dramatic! It's proof that you really can transform a space on a budget!
I was fortunate enough to be provided with free Truffle flooring from Select Surfaces to sample for this post. We did NOT receive free product when we installed our Canyon Oak floors, so we formed our glowing opinion of these Select Surfaces floors before ever receiving any free product! As always, I would never recommend something I do not truly love!

Your bedroom is beautiful. What a great job you did. Especially love the floors, drapes, bedding, really I love it all.
Thanks so much Ida!
Great floors!!! Home damaged in storm & we are replacing carpet with this product!! Tell me more about the Truffle color flooring! It’s not “in the store” & I can’t see it in person. We will need to order it.
Try calling select surfaces to see if they can send you a sample! I think that would give you best opportunity to really judge if you like it.
Love your floors!!! Trying to decide between the Canyon Oak or the Truffle. Does the Truffle have red tones the same as the Canyon Oak?
They both have red tones, but I feel like the Canyon Oak shows more grain. Good luck!
Its looks so beautiful! I really love laminate flooring, we had it in our two previous houses and it was awesome. Our current home is older and when we ripped up our carpet we were surprised by real hardwood so we were pumped. Refinishing hardwood though is something I’ve never attempted…two years later and its still on our to do list ha! Still – better than gross carpet. Anyway, love, love the floors and the whole room!
Thanks so much Megan! Such luck to have hardwoods under your carpet, though refinishing is a bear of a project. Still, great for your home value!
They are beautiful Tasha! And truly such a great way to completely transform a space on a budget. We just put in laminate in the reno house and I can’t believe how amazing the difference is!!
Thanks so much, Krista! We love them!
Love the floors, love the room, love the bed skirt-and I love the wall color! Can you tell me the name of the paint?
Thank you, Vicki! The wall color is Babbling Brook by Olympic, which is sold at Lowe’s. I hope that helps! Thanks so much for reading my blog!
Your rooms are gorgeous! I’ve followed your blog for a long time and love your sense of style. Do you find the floors difficult to keep looking clean because of the dark color? Any hints on how you keep them looking so good?
Thanks so much Teresa! We just use a dry dust mop to pick up link and dog hair every few days and give them a good vacuuming every two weeks. That’s it! Thanks SO MUCH for reading my blog!
So jealous of the floors!!!! It’s the next big project – and should be the last – in our house. I’m so ready for the carpet to be gone!
Thank you so much, Jill! I totally understand about wanting the carpet to be gone. We are eradicating ours slowly but surely!
