Decorating Tips

Hello lovely readers!  If you have followed my blog for a while, you know that we PAINTED our tile backsplash nearly a year ago. Why, you ask?  Well, we did not, errrrrr, “care for it” {that's my very diplomatic way of describing my feelings toward our old backsplash}, but a new tile backsplash was simply not in our budget.  Here is what it looked like before.  My girls and I disagree on what is pictured below.  I insist it's a lion.  My 4-year-old twin girls insist it is a dinosaur.  I'll let you decide :) 2015-03-05_0004 Painting it a dark grey absolutely improved the appearance of the back splash, and the paint has held up PERFECTLY.  It was a brilliant {if I do say so myself} DIY solution!  Except for one problem… We did not have flat, pattern free tiles.  The fact is, we can still see those dinosaurs/lions {and other random images and Latin phrases}, which is a big downer.  The fact is, we still LONG for a more contemporary look that is still budget friendly. WOW! Budget kitchen remodel by Designer Trapped in a Lawyer's Body. Totally transformed with PAINT! #kitchenremodel Well, GUESS WHAT?!  We have found our solution!  Formica® Laminate… YES, Formica® Laminate!  Now, before you think I have lost my mind, let me tell you, Formica® Brand has come a long way since you last saw it in your mama's kitchen.  Jonathan Adler partnered with Formica® Brand and created the The Formica® Laminate Jonathan Adler Collection.  WOOOO HOOOOO!   It is available at Lowe’s home centers and select kitchen and bath distributors nationwide. The full collection can be viewed and samples are available on the Formica® Brand website.  There are three amazing patterns to choose from: Greek Key, Malachite and Lacquered Linen.  And don't even get me started on the fresh, fun colors to choose from–green, orange, blue, charcoal and crème. Aside from the stunning patterns, we are really excited about having a completely sleek and grout-free surface as our backsplash. Talk about contemporary AND easy to clean. Though I love all of the patterns, we are leaning towards the Crème Lacquered Linen pattern. The Lacquered Linen is inspired by mid-century modern furniture.  It features a glossy finish for a new spin on a classic texture.  I think it will look perfect in our kitchen and will pull from the colors in our BOLD stenciled kitchen floor. 2015-03-05_0005 Y'all, I am BEYOND excited to have our new backsplash installed.  Stay tuned… It will be in place soon and I can't wait to share the after photos with you! What do you think of the pattern I have chosen for our kitchen?  What is your favorite pattern? Let me know in the comments below to enter for a chance to win a $100 Lowe's gift card! 104. Patricia Skerlan says:

Thank you, thank you, thank you. I believe you have just given me a solution to my cottage kitchen dilemma.
I love the idea of using the Formica to cover up the ugly 1960’s tiles and the 3″ gap that would be left between my proposed new counter and said ugly tiles. Now the decision of which blue pattern, or should it be orange?

  105. Misty says:

I love it! It should be stylish for years to come.

  110. Sonya says:

I love your kitchen remodel. I did ours using the exact colors (except for yellow on the walls) and it turned out splendidly!! We can’t be more happy with it. I can’t wait to see your new backsplash. I’m sure which ever one you choose will look great!

  111. Ann says:

I vote Cream Lacquered Linen 1, griffin themed tile a big fat ZERO. This is going to look great. I was struck by the ability (on the Formica website) to both order a sample AND download a sample, for that instant gratification that I’m always seeking!

  112. Melissa says:

I really like the blue Greek key but would probably use the charcoal Greek key instead. It is more neutral. Good luck with the backsplash!

  113. I love the Charcoal Greek Key! It reminds me of your floor! I can’t wait to see what you choose and what it looks like. I would not like the lion/griffin in my kitchen either!

  114. Amy B says:

    Also I’m pretty sure that’s a griffin…look at pictures on line…

Love the charcoal malachite. Wish it would go in my kitchen.

  118. Janice Cooper says:

I really like the Crème Lacquered Linen pattern. It’s nice and bright!

  119. Joanna says:

I liked the backsplash before you painted it, but I agree with you about those accent tiles… what kid of creature is that? As far as the Formica backsplash, I think I’d like the Blue Greek Key and then accent it with yellows in my soon-to-be-redecorated kitchen (summertime project).

  120. Joanna says:

While I like the tile before you painted them (I’m looking for ideas for my future – as in DIY this summer – Tuscan Kitchen), I think they look great painted as well. Soooo, I’m thinking the Blue Greek Key would go well in my kitchen with yellow, green, and terra cotta accents. Yes? No?

  121. Susan says:

It’s a griffin; an animal that is half eagle and half lion. Sorry, no dinosaur blood.

  122. Jenn says:

I really like the Blue Greek Key. With white cabinets and a white marble counter, I think it would look fantastic.

  123. Mary says:

I have been pondering replacing my back splash tile and would have to DIM (myself.) This new/improved formica is an option I had not considered. Thanks!

  124. Amanda says:

I know you’re not fond of the backsplash as it is, but I have to say that I absolutely LOVE the painted look! I’m totally with you on how it looked at first, but I thought your paint transformation was perfect. But that’s just coming from a lawyer trapped in a lawyer’s body. LOL!

That being said, I think the new linen look of the backsplash will go really well with the way you’ve redone the rest of the kitchen. :)

  125. michelle says:

When you rip out those old tiles I would happily take the ones with creatures on them — that is MY look!

  126. Shannon says:

    I love herringbone right now!

  127. Stacey b says:

I love the pattern, I feel like it’s actually something I’d go with if I was going to re-do my kitchen back splash. Really love it!

    tcarolinep at gmail dot com

  135. Erika says:

I like the charcoal lacquered linen.

  136. Ashley Bee says:

I think that will fit in MUCH better with your design style. Your painted tiles were a great short-term solution though. :) I also would choose the Crème Lacquered Linen if I had to select a Jonathan Adler pattern.

  137. Susan M. says:

love the linen look as well, its so clean and crisp and classic!

  157. SHEREE BOYD says:

Too plain….you’ll get tired of it.

  158. Lori says:

I like the Charcoal Lacquered Linen the best!

  159. julie says:

    charcoal greek key!

    • Rockyrd says:

Love the linen look- it may be exactly what we need to update a kitchen in a new (old) house we just bought. The cabinets are plain almond formica as well as the back splash. Linen on the back would be a great way to dress up the kitchen w/o redoing the whole thing!
