Stuff a rag into the hole in the floor after removing your old toilet to prevent sewer gases from coming into your home.

STEP 1

Remove the old wax ring using a putty knife. It's pretty gross, so I recommend wearing gloves. After you remove it, you are left with the flange (see photo above).

STEP 2

Replace the flange if it's cracked or old.

STEP 3

Before you move on, be sure to position the new bolts that will hold your toilet in place.

Attach your new wax ring to the bottom of your toilet.

STEP 4

Place your toilet bowl onto the flange. Then place a washer and nut on each toilet bowl bolt and tighten them. Don't over-tighten–you could crack the porcelain.

STEP 5

Use a hacksaw to trim off the excess bolt. You want to cut them short enough that the plastic bolt caps can snap into place.

STEP 6

Attach your tank (if your toilet is in 2 separate pieces), then attach your supply line and check for leaks.

STEP 7

Attach your supply line and check for leaks. Finish up by caulking along the base of your toilet!
