diy car freshener

Hello friends! I am SUPER excited to share this easy, all-natural DIY car air freshener with you today. I don’t know about you, but store-bought car air fresheners almost universally give me a headache or make me nauseous. It’s crazy. So, I have never used them.

But that doesn’t mean my car couldn’t benefit from one. I have twin girls, a dog AND Joe and I are frequently in and out of my car as we run to the home improvement store for all of our DIY projects and we aren’t always smelling our best at those times. So, I came up with an all-natural and pretty solution that I am loving. Read on to learn how to make your own! This post contains some affiliate links. Click here to read my full disclosure policy.

Materials needed for DIY Car Air Freshener:

  • Wool felt balls
  • Quilting thread
  • Large sewing needle
  • 1/4 inch ribbon
  • Essential oils of your choice

How to Make a DIY Car Air Freshener:

1) Thread your needle. Tie a knot at the end of the thread.

2) Begin threading felt balls onto the thread, one at a time. For a larger circle, add more balls.

3) Once you are happy with the size of your circle, sew the two end balls together and tie them off.

4) Add two drops of whatever essential oils on each of your felt balls. To start, I used my Citrus Blend because I love the way it smells and it helps increase alertness, which is great for my long work trips in my car. But, here are some other oils to consider using on yours:

  • Purification- Purification Essential Oil Blend helps freshen the air and eliminate odors with its unique combination of Citronella, Lemongrass, Lavandin, Rosemary, Tea Tree, and Myrtle essential oils, and includes naturally occurring compounds cineol, neral, and geranial. It smells amazing and it REALLY does eliminate odors. I recently washed a load of stinky shoes and added 2 drops of Purifications and the shoes smell better than when they were brand new! It would be fabulous if you haul around lots of stinky sports equipment in your car.
  • Stress Away- I don't know about you, but I am often stressed and rushed when I am in the car. Stress Away is my absolute favorite oil so far because it helps me relax and it smells better than you can possibly imagine! It contains the unique stress-relieving combination of lime and vanilla pure, therapeutic-grade essential oils. Stress Away also includes copaiba and lavender to reduce mental rigidity and restore equilibrium. Featuring powerful plant constituents, such as the cedrol found in cedarwood and the eugenol that occurs naturally in vanilla, Stress Away helps induce relaxation and reduce tension. I diffuse it nearly every night!

So, I used Citrus Blend for now, but I think I will mix mine up over time, depending on what need I have at the time. The best part is you can add drops of oils whenever the scent starts to fade, so it's easy to change it up!

5) Tie a 10 inch to 12 inch length of 1/4 ribbon to your circle of felt balls. This will enable you to hang it from your rear-view mirror. You can see the drops of oil in the photo below, but once the oil dries, it's not visible at all!

  1. Thank you for this idea. I purchased felt ornaments for my kids to decorate for Christmas gifts but seeing this, I think we’ll add some felt inside, oil it up and give them as car fresheners. I appreciate this simple and inexpensive, yet unique idea, especially this year. (Partner of 14 years walked out the day before school started so I am finding myself dealing now with custody, divorce and the expense of being a single parent in my own household when I had not budgeted for it! Now if I could just afford a lawyer I’d be all set. In the meantime, inexpensive this year. :)) I love the natural approach too. A healthy way to heal our world and our hearts! Thank you thank you thank you.

    1. Oh my Shannon, that is a lot to deal with this holiday. Glad my idea helped a little! Hope your holidays were peaceful and may 2017 be a happier (and easier) year. Thanks for reading!

  2. I know it defeats the idea of going all natural, but do you suppose this would work with perfume or room deodorizer (something like febreeze) sprayed on it?

  3. I wonder if I could use dental floss instead of quilting thread. I am going to definitely try this. My hubs is allergic to most perfumey smells, and I, just like you, feel sick from commercial car air fresheners.

  4. Thanks for sharing this! I just ordered some felt balls from Amazon. I recently bought a new car and it sort of has that “stripper club” smell to it. Not so great :( I’m hoping this helps get rid of some that smell. I’m thinking Purification is just what it needs…
