Easiest Ikea Desk Hack EVER!
Last Updated on August 10, 2021
Happy Monday, friends! I have a very hard time spending lots of money on furniture. Part of the problem is that I am thrifty. The other problem is that I don't believe that you have to spend a ton of money on furniture in order to get good quality pieces. Earlier this year, I was in desperate need of a large desk for my craft room/office {you can see the full reveal here}. After searching high and low for a high quality, affordable option, I came up with the easiest Ikea desk hack ever! Read on to learn how to make your very own. Materials Needed for Ikea Desk Hack
- Desk components {all from Ikea}:
- Gold metallic spray paint {this is the exact paint I used}
- Drop cloth or cardboard box
Ikea Desk Hack Tutorial
1) Spray paint ALL components of the Krille legs, including the wheels.
2) If you have purchased furniture at Ikea before, you know that self-assembly is part of the Ikea experience. While my spray paint was drying, I assembled my Alex drawer unit.
3) Once my spray paint was dry, I attached the Krille legs to the desk top and set it up in my office. I placed the smaller desk to the right of the main desk, but I love that I can move it around as needed {read on to see the other variations}.
That's it! I mean, SERIOUSLY, have you ever seen such an easy desk project?! I love the high end look of both my large desk and the small desk. They look expensive, but only cost me around $220 for TWO DESKS!!!!
Best of all, having two separate desks allows me to use them however I need them, depending on the day. When I am working on sewing projects, it works perfectly to place the small desk in front of the large desk to give me a HUGE working space {see below).
What do you think? Will this solve your desk dilemma as well?

Hello again –
The table top only comes in black/brown but t Alex comes in black. Is that what you ordered too? Is that a color match problem?
Hi – can you tell me the name or link to the rug? I love it and plan to make my own desk as well. Thank you thank you!
Hi Rachel! Isn’t the rug awesome! I got it on Rugs USA. Here’s the link: http://www.rugsusa.com/rugsusa/clearancerugs/rugs-usa-re22/black/200SPRE22A-508.html
LOVE your desk hack. :) The legs looks SO amazing now. Did you use the same spray paint for the caster part? No problems with mobility after? Do you sew on the table (Linnmon top/Krille legs) with sewing machine vs just a cutting table? Good stability? I’d like to use as my sewing table too, but want to be sure it’s stable and your feedback will help. Thanks!!
Thanks so much, D! We did use the same spray paint for the casters and have not had any problems with mobility. I DO sew using my table. It’s super sturdy. Mine sits on carpet, but if you are on a hard surface floor, you have the option to lock the casters so the table doesn’t move. I hope that helps!
This is a great use of ikea stuff. The gold paint makes all the difference! Love the legs, too.
Thank you!
Love your office! Where did you find the lamp on the desk?
Hi Tasha! I found that lamp years ago at Home Goods.
Hi Tasha,
I love all your hacks! Can you please tell me what size table tops you used?
Thanks,
Karen
Thanks so much, Karen! I used the 47 1/4×23 5/8 ” and the 39 3/8×23 5/8 ” sizes.
Where is your rug from? Thanks!
Hi Gritt! It’s from Rugs USA.
I see you have two desks but only 1 table top listed in the materials list. Is there another table top in a different size that needs to be purchased?
Hi Erin! The table tops both have the same name, but are available in different sizes. I purchased the same table top in 2 different sizes. I hope that makes sense.
