Our Neutral But Still Colorful Kitchen Design

I'm a notorious color lover, so many of you have shared how surprised/disappointed you are that we chose neutral kitchen cabinets for our kitchen. But I can assure you I will be layering in plenty of color into our otherwise neutral kitchen! I'm sharing all the design details and rationale in this post so you can understand our thought process. Whether you are just curious about our kitchen design plans or you are someone who wants some ideas for adding color to your neutral kitchen, you are in the right place.

In case you missed it, I shared all of the reasons that we decided to fully renovate our kitchen in this post. In that post, I also shared the functional changes we are making, along with the renderings for our new kitchen. So many of you said things like, “I can't wait to see the changes! I hope it's as colorful as your current kitchen.” Y'all loved the blue color I chose for the cabinets as part of the budget-friendly kitchen makeover I tackled almost 4 years ago. It's one of my favorite blue paint colors and I absolutely loved it (you can see it in the photo below)!

So when I revealed the color we chose for our new cabinetry on Instagram, most of y'all were SHOCKED. We chose Accessible Beige by Sherwin Williams, which is one of my favorite neutral paint colors for kitchen cabinets. And we chose this light-blue oversized penny tile for the backsplash, which is not exactly a bold color. In short, most of y'all have been wondering if our new kitchen is going to be entirely neutral.

The short answer is NO! The design plan for our new kitchen is colorful. But most of the color will be introduced through the rugs, curtains, and artwork. If you have followed me for a while, you probably already know that almost all of our walls are painted Pure White by Sherwin Williams because I love how our colorful decor and art POP against the neutral backdrop. That is essentially what we are going for in the kitchen as well.

A Detailed Explanation of Our Kitchen Design and Mood Board

I hope you'll take the time to watch the short (less than 5-minute) video below. In it, I explain how the plans and mood board for our kitchen design came together (I have a whole post to teach you how to make a mood board if you are interested). As I do every time I design a space in our home, I used my Designer in a Binder® system which made coming up with a cohesive design plan easy and fun!

Our New Kitchen Sources

As I mentioned in the video, we are using some items, like the colorblock runner, that we have had for many years and are no longer available. But I've linked to as many sources as possible for you below!

So there you have it! I hope you can now see the colorful vision I have for our kitchen, even if the “bones” of our kitchen are quite neutral :) Be sure to follow along in my Instagram stories for daily updates and you can see all the progress so far in my kitchen plan and kitchen reno highlight bubbles.
