DIY Paper Mache Letters With a Twist

September 29, 2017

Paper mache letters make great home decor all on their own, but they are even better with this special twist!

Hey friends! If you've been around for a while, you know I love typography and have used paper mache letters in a variety of ways in my home. There are several in my typography gallery wall and they make a HUGE impact in our $71 laundry room design.

Today I'm going to show you how I made these super cute paper mache letters for my sweet Avery's room. I initially thought I would use my Cricut to cut out a child's prayer out of vinyl, but then I decided that I didn't want her to have a script for her prayers. After all, I try to emphasize to our kids that prayer is really just talking to God like He is their best friend. They can talk to Him about what they are happy about, sad about, and what they need help with. So in the end, I decided just to emphasize the word “Amen” to remind her to talk to God every day, about anything she wants :) I saw a super cute idea for adding rolled up craft foam to the inside of paper mache letters in a magazine and knew it would be perfect for this project.

Read on to learn how to make paper mache letters like this for anywhere in your home. Spell out ANYTHING and use any colors that you love!

Materials needed:

Steps:

1) Cut off the front of all your paper mache letters using your craft knife. Remove the front and the inner filling material.

2) Cut 1″ strips out of your craft foam. I cut all of my strips using my Cricut Maker cutting machine. I used my strong adhesive mat. If you have a Cricut machine, you can grab my cutting file for 9″ x 12″ craft foam here and 12″ x 18″ craft foam here. I cut them to the maximum length with my machine, and then snipped some in half and some into thirds to create varying lengths so that when they are rolled up, they aren't all the same size.

3) Roll each strip tightly and use your DAP RapidFuse All Purpose Adhesive to glue the ends to hold each roll together tightly. Now, I'm not going to lie. While this is an EASY project, it is kind of time consuming if you are doing it with multiple letters like me. So, I recommend asking your kids to help out. My girls were pretty darn good at helping me roll the strips :)

4) Glue the rolls to the inside of your paper mache letters. Use different sizes and space them out randomly. Place the rolls next to each other until the entire letter is filled.

5) Hang your paper mache letters up using your Command picture hanging strips.

That's it! Such a big impact and a fun project. They look so cute in Avery's bed nook (which you can read more about here).
